Original inhabitants of the land Greenville sits upon were Native American Indians. Members of the Cherokee Nation used the land as hunting grounds. In 1770, an Indian trader known as Richard Pearis was living in the area with the daughter an Indian Chief. Pearis received about 100,000-acres of land for the purpose of hunting. Eventually, Pearis used portions of his land to build a plantation along the banks of the Reedy River. Pearis’ plantation is now modern-day downtown Greenville.

Greenville is located in a climate that experiences very warm summers and mild winters. Daytime temperatures highs throughout the months of June, July and August vary from the mid to upper-80s on average. When heat waves pass through Greenville, it is not uncommon for temperatures to rise to the mid-90s. The warm weather patterns make cooling systems necessary for Greenville residents. They help residents of the city stay cool and dry inside their homes.
In addition to cooling systems, it is also necessary for residents of the City of Greenville to have heating systems installed in their homes. Temperatures will dip below freezing during the months of December, January, and February. Also, snowfall can occur during these months.
